The Mummy is a 1999 American action-adventure horror film directed by Stephen Sommers and written by David Koepp, loosely based on the 1932 film of the same name. It is a remake of the 1932 film The Mummy, which starred Boris Karloff in the title role. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Kevin J. O’Connor, and Arnold Vosloo in the title role as the reanimated mummy of Imhotep.
The Mummy was released in May 1999 (United States), grossing $43 million in its opening weekend and went on to gross over $416 million worldwide. The Mummy’s success led to a 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, as well as The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
