If you binged on Lupin over the weekend, you’re not alone. The French thriller-mystery has held a steady spot in Netflix’s top 10 for days, and it’s an absolute must-watch. Each episode keeps you on the edge of your seat, and that cliffhanger finale? We’ll get to that in a bit.
Lupin’s Intriguing Plot
For those who may have missed it, Lupin follows the story of Assane Diop, a “gentleman’s thief” on a mission to avenge his wrongfully accused late father. Diop’s father was framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and sadly, he passed away shortly after beginning his prison sentence. In adulthood, Diop seeks justice for his father, drawing inspiration from the fictional thief Assane Lupin, from whom the show takes its name.
Season 3 graced our screens on October 5, and the storyline is nothing short of intense. At one point, Diop even fakes his death, and things spiral into even greater extremes from there. Season 3: A Cliffhanger Ending
Season 3 concludes with Assane Diop in prison, a precarious situation indeed. He deliberately orchestrates his arrest to secure the release of his friend and primary accomplice, Benjamin, as well as to ensure the safety of his family, including his ex-girlfriend Claire and their son, Raoul.
Inside the prison, Assane finds himself in a cell adjacent to Hubert Pellegrini, a man he previously had arrested back in Season 2. In a cryptic message, Hubert hints at the betrayal lurking within Assane’s inner circle. Thus, Season 3 leaves Assane at a low point, while one of his adversaries, Hubert, gains more power.
Will There Be a ‘Lupin’ Season 4?
The future of Lupin’s fourth season remains uncertain. Typically, streaming platforms gauge a show’s success before committing to another season. However, given the current surge in Lupin’s popularity on Netflix, a fourth season seems increasingly likely.
What to Expect in Lupin Season 4
As of now, the series hasn’t received an official renewal, so the plot for Season 4 remains a mystery. Season 3’s conclusion, with Diop in prison, could serve as a starting point for Season 4. Additionally, it’s apparent that Hubert Pellegrini seeks revenge, as he shares a cell with Diop in some of Season 3’s final moments and quotes a line from Maurice Leblanc’s “The Revenge of the Countess of Cagliostro.” This suggests that Season 4 may continue to draw inspiration from that novel.
When Might We See Season 4?
Considering there were roughly two years between Season 2 and Season 3, it’s safe to assume that Lupin’s Season 4 won’t grace our screens before 2025. However, it’s worth noting that Season 1 and Season 2 were essentially one continuous season, released just a few months apart in January and June 2021. The episodes in Lupin’s “Part 2” on Netflix (or Season 2) are numbered six through 10. If Season 4 follows this pattern, it could pick up at episode eight, given that Season 3 comprises seven episodes. The exact details remain unclear, but this might hint at a shorter wait for Season 5 if it gets confirmed.
