Yellowstone, the show that keeps fans on the edge of their seats, has spawned a Western universe of spinoffs. From 1883 to 1923 and Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the franchise has expanded, promising more gripping stories. Yet, the original series remains the crown jewel.
It follows the tumultuous journey of the Dutton family, owners of Montana’s sprawling Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. With John Dutton III at the helm, they navigate treacherous family dynamics, conflicts with neighboring properties, and even entanglements with the government as John ascends to the position of Montana’s governor. Premiering in 2018, the show quickly scaled the heights of television ratings.
The Long Wait for Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2
All good things must end, and so it is with Yellowstone. The first part of the final season concluded in January 2023, leaving fans anxiously awaiting the second part. Unfortunately, a storm of controversies has plagued production, involving lead actor Kevin Costner and strikes from WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
When Can Fans Expect Part 2?
Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will finally hit screens in 2024. Originally slated for a summer 2023 release, it was pushed back to November 2023. However, with November looming and the season still incomplete, it’s safe to assume that viewers won’t see it until next summer.
Behind the Delays
The root of the delay can be traced to a clash between Kevin Costner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, along with the wider production team. Costner’s desire to trim his filming commitments for Yellowstone in favor of starring and directing in “Horizon: An American Saga” clashed with his role as the series’ lead actor. Negotiations became strained, with rumors suggesting Costner’s departure in May 2023. Paramount Network countered this speculation with a terse statement: “no news to report.” Nevertheless, the show’s end was confirmed in May, and in September, Costner shed light on his exit: “I couldn’t help them anymore. We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons, there were issues with the creative… We came up with a number, and they walked away. I’ve been told it’s a little disappointing that [it’s] the #1 show on TV [and] I’m not participating.” Legal action regarding his remaining salary looms on the horizon.
Adding to the delay, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted production. Filming hadn’t even commenced when these strikes hit in May and July 2023, respectively. While the writers’ strike has concluded, the SAG-AFTRA strike still endures, putting filming on hold until an agreement is reached.
The Cast: Who’s In, Who’s Out?
Despite the tumultuous relationship between Costner and the production team, there’s hope that he might return to wrap up his character’s storyline. Discussions are ongoing, with Sheridan expressing his disappointment at Costner’s departure. The returning cast includes Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Denim Richards, and Wendy Moniz.
What Lies Ahead in Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2
The first part of season 5 revolved around the conflict between John Dutton and Jamie. Part 2 is expected to bring this storyline to a dramatic conclusion. Furthermore, fans can anticipate further exploration of the enigmatic 6666 ranch. However, many details about the plot remain shrouded in secrecy, including whether the finale will pave the way for the forthcoming Matthew McConaughey-led series.
Why the Split for Season 5?
The decision to split the fifth season of Yellowstone into two parts had a strategic motive. Each half aimed to introduce a new show. While the first part set the stage for “Tulsa King,” the second part was initially intended to lead into “1923,” though the latter series ultimately debuted in December 2022.
