The Academy Awards is a ceremony for people in the film industry where some of the biggest stars in Hollywood get nominated in various categories to win an Oscar. But one award that most stars work toward is Best Picture.

Barbie
Barbie was another big film that everyone talked about last year and was marketed at the same time as Oppenheimer. This created a cultural phenomenon called Barbenheimer, as the hype of the two films blew up upon their release on the same day.
However, the aesthetics and feel of Barbie are the complete opposite of Oppenheimer. It’s a story about a woman living in what’s called Barbie Land. She begins to experience an existential crisis and must travel to the real world so she can find out how to fix her life.
Margot Robbie plays the stunning Barbie, and Ryan Gosling plays the charming Ken. It’s a film with humor, excellent one-liners, and an interesting plot twist.
American Fiction
American Fiction is based on a 2001 Novel written by Percival Everett and titled Erasure. The film follows the story of a frustrated novelist named Monk who’s annoyed by establishments that profit from black entertainment.
Monk wants to prove how outlandish these entertainment industries are that rely on offensive tropes by creating his own ‘Black Book’. He intends the book to be satirical but the liberal elite mistake it for serious literature.
The movie was released on September 8, 2023, and stars Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K Brown, and Erika Alexander. It’s a critically acclaimed film, but most fans believe that if it doesn’t receive an Oscar for Best Picture, it may win awards in other categories it’s nominated for.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Martin Scorsese is one of the top directors of our generation. He’s directed hit films like Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and The Departed. Similar to Christopher Nolan, Martin prefers to use the same actors for his films.
Scorsese’s latest movie is Killer of the Flower Moon, which is categorized as an American epic, Western drama film. It follows the story of an Osage woman whose entire family is murdered in a scheme to take their land and oil.
The film stars Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone. It also has nominations in other categories at the Academy Awards, such as Best Directing and Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Poor Things
Poor Things is a comedy/fantasy movie about a girl who dies and is then brought back to life by a mad scientist. She runs off with a lawyer to go on an epic adventure. The film is considered a postmodern version of Frankenstein. However, the monster is replaced with a young woman named Bella, who, in time, develops her own interests and desires.
You can expect stunning cinematography, strange but unique camera angles, and bizarre scenes throughout the film. The costumes are stunning, too and the reason why the film was nominated for Best Costume Design. Poor Things also has some interesting musical scores, and the unique hair and makeup make Emma Stone look almost unrecognizable.
Emma Stone plays Bella, and William Dafoe plays the unorthodox scientist who brings her back to life.
