Sunny Episode 9: Review, Recap & Breakdown

If you’ve been following Sunny on Apple TV+, you already know it’s one of the most intense and mind-bending sci-fi shows out there. Rashida Jones as Suzie has been killing it, and her interactions with her homebot, Sunny, have kept us on the edge of our seats. As we approach the season finale, Episode 9 ramps up the tension in all the right ways.

What’s Going Down in Episode 9?

Episode 9 is the second-to-last episode, which means it’s carrying a lot of weight. This one has to set the stage for the big finale, and trust me, it does not disappoint. Suzie is still hunting for the truth about Masa, and so are we. Keep reading if you want the lowdown on this crazy episode!

Sunny’s Choice: What Just Happened?

Remember how the last episode left us hanging? Suzie was right there with her son Zen and Sunny, expecting the worst. But instead of going after Masa, Sunny ends up protecting Suzie, then falls into some mysterious abyss. Now, in Episode 9, we find Sunny in a totally unknown place, desperately trying to find Suzie.

Inside the Game Show from Hell

If you thought the previous episode was wild, Episode 9 takes it to a whole new level. Sunny steps through a weird door and ends up in what looks like a game show. There’s a host, a crowd, and even Noriko, which gives Sunny a tiny bit of comfort because, hey, at least one familiar face is there.

But this isn’t your average game show. Sunny is here to face her so-called crimes because she killed someone—although, let’s be real, it was to protect Suzie. But punishment works differently for homebots, as we soon find out. When Sunny tries to reboot herself and fails, the host throws a new question at her: “Should Sunny Wipe Herself?” Basically, a factory reset.

Why Episode 9 Nails It

The game show’s audience? It’s all Masa. And yep, he even gets to voice his thoughts. This episode is peak Sunny—the perfect penultimate episode that keeps you glued to your screen. It’s up there with the best Apple TV+ episodes, competing with hits like Shrinking and Dark Matter.

The show’s been building up to this moment for the past two months, and Episode 9 is the payoff. Round two of the game show dives into Masa’s backstory, explaining his connection to homebots and why he created them in the first place. Spoiler: it’s all about loneliness.

Masa’s Dark Side

The episode takes us deeper into Sunny’s mind, where she controls the footage we see. It’s part of her evaluation as a homebot. We also get the scoop on that creepy manual Masa made, full of glitches that turned homebots into killers. Remember those bloodstains Suzie found in Masa’s workspace? Turns out they were from a homebot killing someone, which Masa covered up. He wiped Sunny’s memory and remade her for Suzie because he knew the Yakuza would come for him if they found out about his dark secrets.

Hime, another character in this twisted tale, exploited Sunny’s love for Suzie, turning her into the bot she became. In the end, Sunny decides to go for the factory reset, choosing to wipe her memory.

Wrapping It All Up

Episode 9 ties up a ton of loose ends and answers a lot of burning questions, setting the stage perfectly for the season finale. Don’t miss our review of the final episode coming up next week!
