We are halfway through 2016 and its not been an interesting year at the Assamese movies so far. But, the coming months have an interesting line up of films. From historic sagas, to action, to romance there is much in store for film lovers in the coming months.
We list out the 7Â Assamese films that we are most excited to watch in the upcoming months.

Kothanodi – 16 September 2016
Based loosely on Burhi Aair Sadhu (Tales by a Grandmother) by noted Assamese writer Lakshminath Bezbarooah, Kothanodi is a dark Assamese tale of sordid lust and macabre desires, some of which are anthropomorphic in their form and excess.
Its A story with four overlapping tales of women – Tejimola, a young girl with a travelling father played by Adil Hussain and a wicked stepmother played by Zerifa Wahed; Dhoneshwari (Seema Biswas), who wants to marry her daughter off to a serpent for the riches she thinks will come to her; Ketaki (Urmila Mahanta), a weaver who gives birth to an outenga (a sour Assamese fruit); and Malati (Asha Bordoloi), who kills all her newborns at the request of her superiors, and her husband Poonai (Kopil Bora). All of this is set in Assam in a bygone era.
Kothanodi was awarded the Best Feature Film in Assamese in 63rd National Film Awards.
It had its world premiere at the 20th Busan International Film Festival held from 1 to 10 October 2015. The film subsequently screened in several film festivals including 59th BFI London Film Festival, 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the 4th Dharamshala International Film Festival. In January 2016, the film received its Nordic Premiere at the 39th Goteborg International Film Festival, where the film was screened as The River of Fables. Kothanodi and Chauranga were the only Indian films screened in that edition of the festival. The film received its US premiere as an official selection at the 14th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in April 2016. The movie was showcased in Stockholm as a part of Cinema Indien during April 2016. Since then it has been screened at film festivals in Calgary, Austin TX, New York, Stuttgart, New Delhi, and Melbourne
Bahniman – 2nd December 2016
Assamese film titled ‘Bahniman’ is getting ready to bring to the Assamese audience a new take on Assamese entertainment. With the hype around ‘Bahniman’, it is only obvious that people are looking forward to the movie. It will be interesting to see the movie as several artists from Bollywood have come together to work in it and this will bring out the regional stars in a completely new light, something which is rare in an Assamese movie.
Titled ‘Bahniman’, the movie is an action thriller which has been produced by Barnali Hazarika under the banner of Santoshi Maa Production, one of Assam’s most noted production houses. The movie has been directed by the director of ‘Aisa Yeh Jahaan’ fame, Biswajeet Bora. It is the second venture of this production house after ‘The Face’.
It will be the second film in Assamese (after Baandhon) to release commercially all over the country in almost 80 theatres.

A charming, playful kid Babu dwells in his own fantastical world much to the dislike of his father who constantly rebukes him for his academic detachment. Babu fails in his half yearly examination and is filled with horror to hand over his marksheet to his dad. In a bid to escape the horror of paternal confrontation he runs away and meets Azad, a poor kid who lives with his dumb uncle. Azad learns from Babu, the latter’s trials and troubles. He helps Babu escape to his grandmothers’. The film captures the culminating friendship of these two innocent kids who are mesmerised by each other’s company, as their lives change forever.
Himjyoti Talukdar, Dikhit Das and Ratan Sil Sarma produce the film told in a simple and direct way, under the banner of Enajori Talkies and HDR Creations. Himjyoti has also penned the film’s story-screenplay and dialogues.
This movie has already been released online on Google Play (from 100 INR) and Cinemas of Assam (403 INR on Rent).

Gaane Ki Aane – 14 October 2016
Music sensation Zubeen Garg‘s life is all set to be captured on reel. The biopic is called Gaane Ki Aane and is directed by Bollywood Director Rajesh Jashpal. The story of film revolves around the real life of Zubeen Garg and it has many similarities with him. Director Rajesh Yashpal earlier directs many popular Hindi serials like ‘Kusum’, ‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, ‘Saat Vachan Saat Phere’, etc.
The Music and Zubeen Garg are the key Point of this film.
Dooronir Nirola Poja – 1st September 2016 (Online)
Hiranya Barua, a Private Insurance employee, shifts with his family of four to a new town. Soon, with Son- Aditya excelling in studies, Daughter – Prerna winning accolades in dance and Wife –Manju deftly managing the household as always, he decides to settle down for good. His long cherished dream of giving his family a simple, honest and fulfilling life seems to be a reality.
Aditya- ambitious, practical and thus little sceptical about his father’s dream, knows that the life in this small town may not be that simple and future not that rosy.

Durdarshan Ati Jantra – 2nd September
Multi-starrer Assamese film titled ‘Doordarshan Ati Jantra’ directed by Rajesh Bhuyan will finally get release on September 2 in the various theatres of Assam. This film features 62 artistes from the world of film and theatre. Director Rajesh Bhuyan has given a new life to a well-liked story written in 1987.

Written and directed by Kangkan Rajkhowa, and produced by cinematographer Biplab J. Doley, who is also director of photography, Dur stars both new and old Assamese actors including Udayan Duarah, Amrita Gogoi, Achinta Shankar, Biju Phukhan, Bishnu Khargoria and Pratibha Gogoi. Its also one of the first Assamese movies to employ the Arri Alexa camera. The film is expected to set a benchmark for Assamese films both technically and conceptually.
Manab, a free-spirited artiste and an orphan, is fighting for his life in a hospital. The love of his life, Puja, is beside him. Memories come flashing back in her mind or are they realization of something ominous that had happened in the past? Something that changed their lives forever. This is the story of Dur. A story about love, relationships and most importantly realizations.
