It’s the 30th. Possibly the 31st. You have somewhere to be and nothing to wear, and every costume shop within driving distance has been picked over since the 24th.
Good news: you almost certainly own a costume already. You just haven’t identified it yet.
This post is organized differently from most last-minute lists. Instead of thirty ideas you then have to shop for, it’s sorted by what’s already in your closet. Open your wardrobe, find the item you own, jump to that section.
Every costume here is buildable in under thirty minutes, and most take under ten. Where something needs a bought item, it’s the kind of thing a drugstore or supermarket has at 9pm.
How to Use This Post
Three tiers, marked on every costume:
⏱ 5 minutes — you own everything. Put it on and leave. ⏱ 15 minutes — you own the clothes, plus some makeup or one household item. ⏱ 30 minutes — you own the base, plus one thing you’ll need to make or buy.
One rule that applies to all of them: commit to the makeup. Last-minute costumes live or die on the face, not the clothes. Five minutes of dramatic eye makeup or a strong lip turns “wearing black” into “clearly a costume.” Skipping it turns the same outfit into “didn’t bother.”
If You Own an All-Black Outfit (6 Costumes)
The single most useful thing in your closet on October 31st.
1. Black Cat ⏱ 5 minutes

All black, cat ears if you have them or drawn-on whiskers and a nose if you don’t. Winged eyeliner extended dramatically. The default for a reason. Need: eyeliner. Ears optional.
2. Shadow / Your Own Shadow ⏱ 5 minutes

All black, including black makeup smudged across the eyes and a matte black lip. Tell people you’re their shadow. It’s funnier than it sounds and requires nothing. Need: dark eyeshadow
3. Cat Burglar ⏱ 10 minutes

All black, a beanie, a black eye mask or eyeliner mask drawn on, and a pillowcase with a dollar sign scrawled on it in marker. Need: pillowcase, marker
4. Widow at a Funeral ⏱ 10 minutes

Black dress, dark lipstick, a black scarf or piece of mesh as a veil, and a tissue. Extremely committed to the bit. Works best if you refuse to explain who died. Need: black scarf or lace
5. Grim Reaper ⏱ 15 minutes

All black, hood up, face painted white or left in shadow. A broom handle stands in for a scythe if you’re desperate. Need: hood or hooded top, white face paint
6. Skeleton ⏱ 30 minutes

All black plus white face paint or white eyeliner drawing bones on your face and hands. The face is the whole costume — a good skull face over a black outfit reads perfectly. Need: white face paint or white eyeliner
If You Own a White Dress or Slip (5 Costumes)
7. Ghost ⏱ 5 minutes

White dress, pale makeup, dark circles smudged under the eyes. Don’t overdo the face — washed out and slightly wrong is scarier than heavily painted. Need: pale foundation or translucent powder
8. Angel ⏱ 10 minutes

White outfit, halo made from a wire hanger and tinsel or foil, gold or white eye makeup. The hanger halo takes about four minutes. Need: wire hanger, foil or tinsel
9. Bride of Something ⏱ 15 minutes

White dress, a veil made from a length of tulle or net curtain, and heavy dark eye makeup. Add a smear of red at the mouth if you want it gothic. Need: tulle, netting, or a white scarf
10. Greek Goddess ⏱ 15 minutes

White dress or a bedsheet pinned at the shoulder, gold jewelry, hair pinned up loosely, a laurel made from any greenery you can find outside. Need: gold jewelry, a belt or cord
11. Static / TV Ghost ⏱ 20 minutes

White dress, hair brushed forward over the face, grey and black makeup smudged into a blur. Genuinely unsettling and costs nothing. Need: grey eyeshadow
If You Own a Flannel (4 Costumes)
12. Scarecrow ⏱ 15 minutes

Flannel, jeans, straw or raffia stuffed into the cuffs and collar if you have any, and stitched-mouth makeup with rosy cheeks. The makeup does all of it. Need: brown and black eyeliner, blush
13. Lumberjack ⏱ 5 minutes

Flannel, jeans, boots, a beanie, and a drawn-on beard if you want. Low effort and universally understood. Need: nothing
14. 90s Grunge ⏱ 5 minutes

Flannel tied around the waist, band tee, ripped jeans, smudged dark eyeliner, boots. It’s an aesthetic rather than a costume, which is exactly what you want when you’re out of options. Need: eyeliner
15. Zombie Anything ⏱ 20 minutes

Flannel, dirt or coffee grounds rubbed into it, torn edges, grey-green makeup and dark hollowed eyes. The flannel is expendable, which is the point. Need: face paint, an old flannel you don’t mind ruining
If You Own Denim (4 Costumes)
16. Cowgirl or Cowboy ⏱ 10 minutes

Denim, boots, a plaid or white shirt, and a hat if you have one. Currently the most on-trend Halloween look, so you’ll look intentional rather than desperate. Need: hat is helpful but optional
17. Rosie the Riveter Silhouette ⏱ 15 minutes

Denim shirt, red bandana tied in a knot at the front of the hair, red lip, winged liner. Instantly recognizable, entirely from things people own. Need: red bandana or scarf
18. Greaser ⏱ 10 minutes

Cuffed jeans, white tee, denim or leather jacket, hair slicked back. Add a comb in the pocket for commitment. Need: hair gel
19. Canadian Tuxedo Tourist ⏱ 10 minutes

Full denim on denim, a camera around your neck, socks with sandals, sunglasses, a map. It’s a costume about a person, and those always land. Need: camera, sunglasses
If You Own a Trench Coat or Blazer (4 Costumes)
20. Film Noir Detective ⏱ 10 minutes

Trench coat, dark clothes underneath, a hat if you have one, a notepad in the pocket. Warm, elegant, and one of the best last-minute options there is. Need: nothing
21. Spy ⏱ 10 minutes

Trench or blazer, all black underneath, dark sunglasses, an earpiece improvised from headphones. Stand in corners and refuse to make eye contact. Need: sunglasses
22. Office Worker Losing It ⏱ 15 minutes

Blazer, shirt half-untucked, tie loosened or askew, coffee cup, smudged makeup and exhausted eyes. Everyone will recognize it immediately. Need: coffee cup, smudged eyeliner
23. Undercover Anything ⏱ 5 minutes

Trench coat over a normal outfit, then flash it open to reveal a t-shirt with something written on it in marker. The joke is the reveal. Need: a plain tee, a marker
If You Own Sweats or Athleisure (4 Costumes)
For when comfort is the only requirement left.
24. Athlete From Any Sport ⏱ 5 minutes

Sweats, sneakers, a towel around the neck, hair pulled back, maybe a stopwatch. Pick a sport and commit verbally. Need: nothing
25. Sleep Paralysis Victim ⏱ 15 minutes

Pajamas or sweats, wild hair, dark hollowed eyes, and a genuinely alarmed expression maintained all evening. Comfortable and unsettling. Need: dark eyeshadow
26. Yoga Instructor Who Has Given Up ⏱ 10 minutes

Full athleisure, a rolled mat under one arm, iced coffee in the other hand, dead-eyed expression. Specific enough to be funny. Need: yoga mat, cup
27. Person Who Peaked in High School ⏱ 10 minutes

Old school hoodie or team shirt, sweats, a trophy or medal if you have one. Tell everyone about the game. Need: any old sports memorabilia
Makeup-Only Costumes (4 Ideas)
Wear whatever you were already wearing. The face is the costume.
28. Sugar Skull ⏱ 30 minutes

White base, black eye sockets, floral detailing around the eyes and forehead, dotted patterns. Needs time and a steady hand, but the payoff is enormous and the clothes are irrelevant. Need: white and black face paint, a fine brush
29. Cracked Doll ⏱ 20 minutes

Porcelain-pale base, exaggerated round blush circles, oversized drawn-on lashes, and fine dark cracks spreading from one eye. Genuinely creepy. Need: pale foundation, blush, black eyeliner
30. Stitched Mouth ⏱ 10 minutes

Black eyeliner stitches extending from the corners of your mouth, dark smoky eyes, otherwise normal clothes. Ten minutes, maximum impact, and it photographs incredibly well. Need: black eyeliner
31. Glitch ⏱ 15 minutes

Neon eyeshadow in offset stripes across one side of the face, like a screen tearing. Modern, strange, and it looks deliberate rather than lazy. Need: two bright eyeshadow colors

Costumes to Avoid Last Minute
Anything requiring a wig you don’t own. Wigs are the first thing to sell out and the most obvious thing to fake badly.
Anything requiring a specific colored item you don’t have. “I’ll just find a yellow dress” on October 30th is optimism, not a plan.
Full-face prosthetics or liquid latex if you’ve never used them. They take far longer than the tutorials suggest and they fail visibly.
Anything that requires a second person to also be ready. Couples costumes decided at the last minute almost never come together. Go solo.
Fake blood on anything you like. It stains. Every time. If you’re using it, wear something you don’t care about.
Any costume you can’t sit down in. You’ll be in a car, on a couch, on a bar stool. Test sitting before you leave.
FAQ
What’s the easiest last-minute Halloween costume? All black plus dramatic eyeliner makes a cat, a shadow, or a burglar in under five minutes. If you own a white dress, a ghost takes about the same.
Can I make a Halloween costume with no money? Yes. Every costume in the makeup-only section and most of the all-black and denim sections use only things people already own, plus makeup you likely have.
What can I be for Halloween with just black clothes? Cat, shadow, cat burglar, widow, grim reaper, or skeleton. Black is the most versatile base there is, and the makeup determines which one you are.
How do I make a costume look intentional rather than lazy? Commit to the makeup and add one prop. A strong face plus a single deliberate object reads as a costume. Clothes alone read as an outfit.
What household items work as costume materials? Wire hangers, aluminium foil, bedsheets, cardboard, safety pins, old tights, and permanent markers cover the majority of DIY costume needs.
What’s a good last-minute costume that’s still comfortable? Film noir detective, cowgirl, grunge, or any of the athleisure options. All of them let you wear your own shoes and sit down comfortably.
